There’s much more to staging a play than casting the actors and directing rehearsals. Every production depends on a talented team working behind the scenes to turn ideas into reality and keep each performance running smoothly.
Whether you already have technical experience or would simply like to learn something new, there are plenty of ways to get involved.
Stage manager
The stage manager takes charge of everything happening on stage and backstage during a performance. They make sure the cast are ready, coordinate scene changes and oversee the movement of scenery and set.
It’s a central role for someone who is organised, calm under pressure and enjoys bringing a team together.
Lighting designer
Working closely with the director, the lighting designer helps create the atmosphere of the production, from subtle changes of mood to dramatic visual effects.
The role can involve designing the lighting, rigging equipment and programming the lighting desk. We have experienced technicians who are happy to share their knowledge, so newcomers can join the team, assist with a production and develop their skills.
Sound designer
The sound designer works with the director to create the production’s soundscape. This can include finding, recording, combining and editing music and sound effects.
Our experienced sound volunteers welcome people who would like to assist, learn how the equipment works and gain practical experience.
Set-building team
Our set-building team transforms the stage for every production. Working with the director, the team helps develop the set design before building, painting and installing it.
You don’t need to be a professional carpenter or artist to help. There are jobs for different interests and abilities, and it’s a satisfying way to see your work become part of the finished production.
Props assistant
The props assistant finds, makes or buys the objects needed for a production and keeps track of them throughout rehearsals and performances.
We have our own props store, but every play brings a few unusual requests. This is an ideal role for someone who is organised, resourceful and enjoys a creative challenge.
Costume assistant
The costume assistant helps find and prepare the clothing worn by the cast. Many items can be sourced from our costume store, while others may need to be hired, altered or created especially for the production.
It’s a rewarding role for anyone with an interest in clothing, sewing, period styles or helping characters come to life.
